Widnes sweep aside Salford to maintain 100% start

Widnes continued their perfect start to the season, with an entertaining 32-18 win over Salford.

Stand-off Kevin Brown scored twice for the Vikings, who have now won six straight Super League matches.

The Red Devils led 12-8 at the interval, but the home side produced a rampant second-half performance to win through.

Chris Dean opened the scoring at the Select Security Stadium, before the visitors hit back through Greg Johnson and Tommy Lee.

Johnson’s effort could be considered an early contender for try of the season, as the former Batley winger broke from his own half and then had the pace and step to leave opposition full-back Rhys Hanbury rooted to the spot.

On the stroke of half time Danny Tickle knocked over a penalty for Widnes, and he was soon on kicking duty again after the break, as he converted Joe Mellor‘s try.

The away side retook the lead through Theo Fages, but after the Frenchman’s score it was one way traffic.

Firstly Hanbury crossed and then Brown added his brace of tries to wrap up the victory for Denis Betts’ side, who face Leeds at Headingley next Friday.

Salford meanwhile have now lost two consecutive matches, and although there were some good individual performances from the likes of Jason Walton and Jake Mullaney, the Red Devils need to regroup before they welcome Warrington to the AJ Bell Stadium.
