Swinton Lions have a new coach, after it was confirmed that Ian Watson has left the club to join Salford’s coaching staff.

Swinton have moved swiftly to replace him, having appointed former Scotland international John Duffy as coach.

John Roddy, development director for Swinton Lions said: “It was a shock when we received Ian’s resignation, however we fully appreciate that in any young coach’s career, it is important that they can pursue their ambitions.

“Whilst not the best timing, Ian does leave us in a good position and one which a new coach can pick up very quickly working with both Wes and Marlon, our assistance coaches, to continue our recent good performances.

“May I on behalf of the Swinton Lions Board wish Ian all the very best of luck at Salford and we thank him for his hard work with us.”

John Duffy, who worked alongside Scotland coach Steve McCormack at the 2013 World Cup, has now been appointed as Lions coach.

“I am absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity to join Swinton Lions, I am well aware of its fantastic history and loyal support having played against the club a few times in my career,” said Duffy.

“Having attended the Barrow game I was really impressed with the team’s performance and work rate and  I look forward to getting stuck in straight away with the coaching team and team ensuring that our recent hard work continues.

“I look forward to seeing our fans at our next home game this weekend against Workington, in the meantime there is much to do and focus upon and we will be giving 100% for all our remaining games this season.

“I have been really impressed with what I have heard from the Swinton Lions Board and their future plans and I will be working hard with them to improve our supporter numbers and commercial activities.”
