Sheffield Eagles hooker Andrew Henderson will take up a role as assistant coach at London Broncos next season.

Henderson, 35, will join London in November of this year, and has signed a two-year deal.

The Scotland international, who was also head of youth development at the Eagles, will work with current Broncos coach Joey Grima.

Henderson has established himself as a real fans’ favourite at Sheffield, with his enthusiasm for the sport always apparent. An articulate speaker and a great thinker on the game, the dummy half is sad to be departing from the Eagles.

“I will be sad to leave Sheffield and would like to thank the board, fans and players as it’s been a great place to be for my family and me,” he said.

“The club gave me a great opportunity back in 2010 at a difficult time and I’m glad I have been able to repay them with 4 years of dedicated service.

“I leave knowing that I have played an important part in further developing and improving the young players. I’m proud to see some of these players now knocking on the door of the 1st team.

“On the playing front I’ve really enjoyed playing with the boys and it feels great to have contributed to this success in recent years.

“I am with Sheffield until the end of the season and I will continue to be committed to doing my best both on and off the field for the team and the club in my Head of Youth role. I really hope as a team we can turn things around and finish on a high at the back end of the season.”

Sheffield coach Mark Aston is disappointed to lose Henderson, but has wished him all the best in his new role.

“Hendo has been a massive part of Sheffield Eagles for the last four years and we will be sorry to see him go.

“He has been great for us both as a player and with his involvement with the coaching and youth development.

“On the field Hendo leads from the front and really knows how to rally his troops.

“Since he got involved with the youth development and academy set up we have seen significant change to the young players’ skills and development which have been showcased on the field as the squads go from strength to strength.

“We would like to express our thanks to Hendo for all he has done for the club and of course wish him every success with his new venture.  I am sure he will have a long and successful career ahead of him as a coach.

“I know Hendo has established himself as a ‘local lad’ here in Sheffield and the door will always be open to him and his family.”
