Blake South lands at Eagles

Sheffield Eagles have confirmed that Australian hooker Blake South has joined them for the 2015 season.

The 22-year-old joins from New South Wales Cup side North Sydney Bears, having come through the junior ranks at Penrith Panthers.

He is a good tackler, currently lying at second in the NSW Cup tackle counts, and has also kicked six 40/20s this season.

South also qualifies for England via his grandfather. He has signed a one-year deal with Sheffield.

“I’m very excited about joining Sheffield Eagles for the 2015 season. Sheffield Eagles are a very passionate club and have very passionate fans,” he said.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play Rugby League in the UK, as my late grandfather was born in England and I would like to honour him and his heritage.

“I’m looking forward to getting over and meeting my new teammates and the coaching staff.  I have spoken with Mark Aston and I’m really impressed with his passion for the club and his desire to succeed.

“I also like the quality of rugby league in the UK, as it is a strong competition.”

Eagles coach Mark Aston is delighted to have added such a quality player to his ranks.

“We are delighted that Blake has chosen to join us here at the Eagles,” he said.

“He comes with a good pedigree and his ability to play is proven by his inclusion in the NRL squad system.

“My good friend Jeff Hardy was able to back up what I have heard about Blake; that he has good personality and character and a desire to learn and be successful.

“Blake will be a strong addition to the squad and I am looking forward to working with him.”
