Myler: There’s a real buzz about Super League again
Warrington half-back Richie Myler says the new structure has created a buzz around Super League again.
Myler, 24, was in attendance at the Super League launch in Manchester as the exciting new era was unveiled.
As well as the mid-season split, this year also sees the reduction of the end of season play-offs to four teams – meaning reaching the Grand Final from fifth, where Warrington finished last season, is no longer possible.
The general consensus is that a good start to the season is vital, and that intensity will be greater across the board.
Myler said: “It’s give a real buzz to Super League again. Everyone has got their head around how it’s going to work now and it’s going to be good.
“It’s got rid of teams peaking at the end of the season. You have to be right to go at round one. We’ve built a squad capable of doing good things, and we’ll hope to get it right from round one.
“You can’t win it from fifth or sixth anymore, you need to start well and maintain it, and be consistent throughout the year.”
Warrington missed out on a third successive Grand Final appearance with a 16-12 defeat to Wigan in one of the games of Super League last season, and have recruited strongly in the off-season – adding Man of Steel Daryl Clark and Fiji international Ashton Sims from the NRL.
Myler added: “Ashton is a top bloke. He’s fitted in phenomenally well, and it feels like he’s been a part of the furniture for a long time. I think he’s in for a good year.
“We weren’t far off last year, and Michael Monaghan was a big part of the team. He needed replacing, and Clark definitely does that, if not better. He had an outstanding year last year, and hopefully he can replicate that again.”
Warrington kick-off their season at home to Salford on Saturday afternoon.
