Army veteran Andy Reid inspires Eagles
Former soldier Andy Reid was on hand as the Include Foundation’s guest of honour at Sunday’s game between Sheffield Eagles and Halifax at Doncaster.
Reid, who was wounded in Afghanistan in 2009 while serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. He lost three of his limbs in a mine explosion.
He was at the game helping to raise awareness and funds for the Soldiers’ Charity ABF, which provides support for former soldiers and their families, by providing grants to individuals and other specialist charities.
A guard of honour was formed as the players and Andy took to the field. He carried the match ball on for the game and presented the man of the match award to Steve Thorpe at full time.
He also gave an inspiring talk based on his Army and life experiences, and the challenges he has overcome.
“It was a massive honour to meet and receive my award off an absolute legend and inspirational man,” said Thorpe.
“It was a privilege meeting Andy.”
The Include Foundation’s manager Nick Gill was delighted to have had Reid as a guest at the game.
“What a true inspiration Andy is and he demonstrates what can be achieved with determination and hard work,” he said.
“A true example that we all have the ability to achieve our goals in life when coupled with the correct attitude.
“Having Andy join us for Making the Big Game Bigger really created a fantastic atmosphere within the stadium as every single spectator gave him a standing ovation.”
A total of £616.46 was raised for the Soldiers’ Charity at the game, which Eagles won 36-10.
