Gidley will bring good things to Wolves, insists Smith

Warrington coach Tony Smith is looking forward to working with current Newcastle Knights player Kurt Gidley next season.

The Wolves confirmed earlier this week that Gidley would moving to Super League from the NRL next season, on an initial 12-month contract.

Smith wants Gidley to bring his experience and nous to the half-back or full-back positions next season, and is expecting the Australian to be an impressive all-round presence at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

“Lots of good things,” he said, when asked what Wolves fans could expect from Gidley.

“He’s a good human being, he’s a good rugby league player, he’s a good club man.

“He’s experienced, and he’ll bring some smarts and steadiness to our rugby league that we need at times.”

Smith believes that Gidley’s experience of big occasions means that his on-field decision-making is superb.

The 32-year-old also brings a professional outlook and committed team ethic to the club, in Smith’s view.

“He knows when to do what at what times, and that comes from experience and from being in some of the biggest games,” the Wolves coach added.

“He’s played for Australia and New South Wales for many, many years, and in big games for Newcastle.

“He’s just a champion fellow, and nobody’s got a bad word to speak about him.

“He’s playing really good rugby league, still.

“We look forward to when he joins us for next year.”
