Hay seeking a smarter Featherstone

Featherstone Rovers coach Andy Hay wants his team to use their brains a little more effectively this weekend, as they look to bounce back from defeat to Leigh last week.

The game against the Centurions was a bad tempered clash at the Summer Bash at Blackpool, and Hay wants his team to show more composure against Batley this week, especially in possession.

“Last week was tough against Leigh in Blackpool but that’s what we expected as they are decent side,” said Hay.

“We got in to some decent positions last weekend but we need to do a lot better with the ball in hand and be a lot smarter when we have possession.

“Our ball retention was not good enough, especially when playing a side like Leigh so that’s something we need to improve upon and what I’m looking for this week and next.”

Hay was encouraged by the spirit his team showed last week, and also the way his forward pack stood up to a sizeable and intimidating Leigh pack.

“As a group we stuck together well and one of the positives last week was the performance of our forwards against a big pack and we’ll be facing another big pack this weekend against Batley,” he said.

“The Bulldogs have a big set so it will another test for our boys but it’s one we are looking forward to.

“It seems like a long time ago since we had a home game so our lads are eager to play at the Big Fella’s Stadium again and everything that brings.

“We’ve got two games now at home with Halifax next Saturday so it’s important we get in to that winning habit again.”
