Sam Tomkins will be rested for the match against France but has been declared fit for the first Test against New Zealand next weekend.

The fullback is still recovering from a knee issue that has kept him on the sidelines for the past eight weeks.

England coach Steve McNamara said Tomkins was close to be right for the France game, which will held in Leigh this Saturday.

“He was very close to be considered for selection but he want him to be 100% fit before he performs,” he said.

“It’s a strong team and I’m looking forward to the game.”

Leeds custodian Zak Hardaker has been named as England‘s fullback to face the French.

McNamara declared that Tomkins, who had an injury-plagued season in the NRL, will be right for the first Test in Hull.

“He’ll be fine,” he said.

“He’s trained really well. It was a decision made pretty early to be honest to make sure he’s 100% fit for the New Zealand series.”

Hardaker gets the chance to make the England number one spot his own after a series of impressive performances for the Rhinos in Super League.

McNamara said he was looking forward to see Hardaker in action against the French.

“Zak’s had a tremendous season,” he said.

“I think it has been well documented the quality of his performances this year.

“He’s the current Man of Steel, which is no mean feat. He’s had a tremendous year and he gets his opportunity this weekend.”
