Williams ecstatic after England win

Wigan half-back George Williams is stoked with England‘s victory over New Zealand in Hull but says the team will have to improve for the second Test.

England got the crucial opening Test win, with the next match to played in London this week.

Williams was prominent in the victory, setting up Brett Ferres‘ first try, and linking well with halves partner Gareth Widdop.

“I’m massively stoked. What an experience for me,” he said.

“It’s my first real massive test against the New Zealand side. I enjoyed it.

“We didn’t start too well. They were blowing us away in the ruck to be honest but I thought we did well to ground the win out in the end. I’m happy.”

In only his second apearance for England, Williams looked comfortable against the world champions.

The 21-year old believes his partnership with Widdop can improve.

“It’s been going well in training. We had a good run out against France,” he said.

“It’s clicking a bit now and it can only get better, we’ve only played two games together.

“I thought I did alright. I came into the game a bit and in the second half I didn’t have a lot to do.

“I enjoyed it and can’t wait for next week.”

Williams said the Test match was one of the most physical games he’s played in, with England keeping the Kiwis scoreless in the second half.

“They’re a huge team, probably the biggest team I’ve ever played against,” he admitted.

“It was a good challenge for me. Some big hits went in. It was probably one of the most physical games I’ve been involved in.

“They’ve got some world-class players. To be challenging yourself against the likes of Tuivasa-Sheck, he’s very good, so it was great defence.”

Williams believes England will have to lift its performance to wrap the series up at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

“It’s a massive game. We’ve still got a lot to give next week,” he said.

“We didn’t perform how we wanted to and so did the Kiwis. It should be a good game.”
