Beaumont believes Leigh can be undefeated

Derek Beaumont believes that Leigh Centurions can go unbeaten throughout the regular season.

With the Centurions having strengthened massively in the likes of Willie Tonga, Harrison Hansen and Rangi Chase, as well as keeping hold of star players such as Ryan Brierley, Beaumont is already looking to a better season this time around.

Leigh finished bottom of the Super 8 Qualifiers in 2015, depite winning the Championship league leader’s shield, but Leigh’s head of rugby has been quick to insist that Paul Rowley and the team are ready to take the club to a new level.

“I know the old saying, nothing is guaranteed in sport, as there are too many outside influences. So many will perhaps say I am a little bold when I state 2016 will be a year where we again break records we have previously set in the last two years,” Beaumont told the Leigh Observer. 

“I also think the six tries in a game by one player looks vulnerable, based on what I have seen so far. However the achievement I believe is possible is to go through the comp without defeat home and away in the regular season.”

Beaumont said that despite this being a possibility, it isn’t a target for the club this time around. He did make a bold statement about the club’s chances in the Super League Middle 8’s though, and that the teams that come down from Super League should be looking over their shoulder.

“While this isn’t a goal we have set and Paul Rowley will rotate his squad, we only have a small squad and it is strong in all quarters so I don’t really think it weakens by rotation,” he said.

“I will also confidently state that I do not think Leigh will be involved in the Million Pound Game. I believe I will be watching two Super League sides contest that fixture with the boys, somewhere warm, as a reward of achieving our goal.”
