Whitehaven win Cumbrian clash

Whitehaven came out on top in the Cumbrian derby against Workington Town with a narrow 28-24 victory at the Summer Bash.

Dave Allen crossed inside three minutes, Louis Jouffrey converting to give Whitehaven an early 6-0 lead.

Jarrod Sammut showed great skill, kicking the ball ahead before crashing over.

Five minutes later and Chris Taylor scored on the far side for Whitehaven. Taylor’s try left Haven 12-4 in front.

Soon after a chance went begging for Workington Town as Sammut kicked the ball out of play within 10 metres of the try line.

In the 19th minute Callum Phillips showed great footwork to go pass three Whitehaven players before going over near the posts, the score being confirmed by the video referee after a contested double movement.

Carl Forber converted to bring Workington Town to within two points of their opponents.

In the 22nd minute Jessie-Joe Parker extended Whitehaven’s lead crossing over after a scrum win, Jouffret converting to make it 18-10.

At the other end, Sammut scored his second try of the half after a sublime kick forward with the outside of his right boot over at the far side.

Town gifted Whitehaven another chance, Jouffret presented with the chance to score a penalty which he duly obliged.

Eight minutes before the interval and Allen went close for Whitehaven before Parker tried kicking the ball through but over cooked the pass.

Jouffret carried on his kicking success with a penalty in the 35th minute, making it 22-16, Olstrom being penalized for a ball steal.

Craig Calvert went over early in the second half after a brilliant pass from Jouffret, Town now trailing their Cumbrian rivals by eight points.

Just two minutes later, Declan Hulme crashed over in the corner to bring Workington back within six.

In thr 65th minute Jouffret scored another penalty from more than 40m out in the centre to extend Whitehaven’s lead over Workington to eight points.

Town cut Whitehaven’s lead down to four points with just over ten minutes to play courtesy of Sammut.

In the last three minutes, Sammut tried to level the scores with a bomb near the centre but Parker caught the ball well and preserved Whitehaven’s lead.
