Warrington strike down St Helens

Warrington Wolves kept the pressure on league leaders Hull FC with an emphatic 26-4 victory against St Helens at Langtree Park.

Six minutes played and Ben Currie opened the scoring for Warrington, going over at the near side after a dummy from Chris Sandow.

Jonny Lomax almost went close to a first touchdown for St Helens but for a last-ditch interception from Kurt Gidley.

Sandow soon added his name to the scoresheet, showing great footwork to ghost past two Saints players before crossing for a second Warrington try inside 20 minutes.

Kurty Gidley completed the conversion to give the Wolves a 10-0 lead.

Tom Lineham almost secured a third try for Warrington without reply over on the far side but for Adam Swift’s tackle two metres from the whitewash leading to a St Helens scrum.

Ryan Atkins exposed a hole in the St Helens defence on the near side to run over a third try for Warrington after a great kick from Ben Currie.

Stefan Ratchford extended the Wolves’ lead just three minutes into the second half, crossing over near the centre after a breakaway run down the field from Daryl Clark.

The Wolves moved 26-0 in front, Rhys Evans scoring a second try in five minutes for Warrington, going over in the corner on the near side after a deft kick from Gidley.

Into the last quarter of the match, Gidley showed great vision with a kick to almost pick out Sandow on the try line but Kyle Amor intercepted, resulting in a goal-line drop-out.

Jonny Lomax registered the first points of the night for the hosts with six minutes of normal time remaining, avoiding two attempted tackles before crossing the whitewash.
