Sinfield: The man behind the legend

Kevin Sinfield enjoyed an illustrious career in rugby league, winning numerous trophies.

The stand-off won everything on offer in Super League with Leeds before hanging up his boots at the end of last year and crossing codies.

Sinfield spoke to Love Rugby League, giving an in-depth account of his times as a player.

After nearly two decades in the game, he admits there were two periods which were the most memorable.

“I think one of the best moments has to be my last season with Leeds,” Sinfield said.

“To win the treble and play my last game at Old Trafford was very special.

“Being named as captain for England was also a huge honour. I really enjoyed playing under Steve McNamara.”

Growing up and learning the game, Sinfield said he looked up to Ellery Hanley.

“For me he was a great leader, who was lifting trophies for Wigan at the time,” he admitted.

“From my era he was everyone’s hero.”

After making over 500 appearances for the Rhinos, Sinfield decided to switch codes, joining Yorkshire Carnegie.

“It was something which was still on my to-do list. I felt it was something I needed to do.

“I am really proud to have had the courage at 35 to take up a new sport.

“Going to join a new dressing room was also a great challenge.”

Making the transition from league to union was not easy for the seven-time Super League winner.

“It was tough, especially going into fly-half,” Sinfield admitted.

“The game management was also something which took time to get my head around.

“When you look at the two games, they seem similar but the longer I was playing union I realized that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Having said that it was very enjoyable and a challenge which I embraced.”
