Veivers wants less errors at Swinton

Workington Town travel to Swinton on Sunday on the back of a 54-12 battering at Leigh Centurions last weekend.

Coach Phil Veivers felt his team made too many errors, and hopes that his injury-hit squad can cope with being depleted against the Lions.

“I thought we were patchy [last week],” he said.

“We controlled them for periods of the game and then imploded with errors and penalties and gave them back-to-back tries in the first half.

“At 24-12 I thought they were rocking and rolling and we were in control of the game. Then Jamie Doran drops a kick off and straight from that they score a try.

“Heads seemed to drop from there. I don’t think the score resembled what the game was about, it ended up being a blow-out.

“We picked up injuries again last week, I’m very, very light on backs. I’ve been trying to get into the loan market this week and get some players in but have been unsuccessful.

“It will be a tough game against Swinton, Duffs has done a good job there, they throw some good shapes at you, they’re enthusiastic and they’ve got some really determined players.”

Swinton beat Sheffield Eagles 22-18, which came as a huge relief to coach John Duffy, after a bleak period.

“We were desperate for that win, hopefully we can take some confidence from it, kick on, get some more points and try and get safe,” he said.

“Workington have some great players, I really rate Mattinson at nine and Callum Phillips, they’re really dynamic.

“Sammut can create something out of nothing. It’s always tough to go up to Cumbria and we’re going to have to cope with that mentally.

“We’ll try and prepare the best we can and go up there with a good attitude because it’s going to be rough and tough.!
