George Williams is set to make his Warrington debut

The 26-year-old joined the Wolves three weeks ago after being granted a release by his Australian club Canberra Raiders but his bid to regain fitness following his two-month lay-off has been disrupted by a Covid-19 outbreak which forced the postponement of the club’s last two Super League fixtures and a shutdown of their training ground.

“George won’t come into consideration,” Warrington coach Steve Price said. “He’s still got a bit more work to do.

“The shutdown has played its part. It’s important when we put people on the pitch, they’re fit and they can sustain a level of performance which is acceptable at our club.

“He hasn’t really done too much since he arrived. He’s got a few more boxes to tick.”

Price says Williams will come into consideration for Sunday’s game against Leeds at Headingley.

Warrington are still without scrum-half Gareth Widdop and winger Josh Charnley has been left out of Price’s 20-man squad for unspecified reasons but the coach is hoping to make an addition before kick-off.

“We’re still waiting on one more,” Price said. “We’re waiting for the authorities to get back to us on whether it’s a go-er.”

Price admits he has been able to do little training with his squad due to the shutdown but is confident his players will be in the right frame of mind for the derby clash.

“We’ve had a fair bit of Covid go through our place over the last two weeks,” he said. “Over the last 14 months or so we’ve had it under control but unfortunately we had one player and it’s ripped a complete fireball through us.

“We got shut down for seven or eight days, We couldn’t do anything and, when we got back, we only had a limited amount of players because they were still on their seven-day return protocol.

“It is what it is. The boys are excited for Wednesday. We played enough football in the first part of the season to understand what we stand for.

“The boys are in a good mindset which is really important at this time of the year.”
