Warrington game off after Hull report positive COVID cases

Warrington’s game with Hull on Sunday has been postponed, after the Airlie Birds reported a number of positive COVID tests.

The multiple cases group have advised a five-day shutdown from their last training session on Thursday until another round of testing on Tuesday.

A Super League statement said: “The postponed fixture will be added to the list for possible rearrangement, although the Betfred Super League table is to be determined by win points percentage to allow for the possibility of not all fixtures being fulfilled.”

It is the latest in an ever-increasing number of Super League fixtures that have fallen victim to coronavirus this season.

The league table is being calculated by points percentage, though teams must play at least 18 games to be eligible for the play-offs.

Hull were last in action on Monday, when they went down to a 42-10 defeat at home to champions St Helens.

Warrington were 27-26 winners at Leeds last Sunday, five days after beating Wigan at home 21-8.

Their previous two games, against Hull KR and Leigh, had been postponed due to COVID regulations.

The Wolves are next scheduled to be in action next Sunday against Wakefield, while Hull have a trip to France to face Catalans on Friday, a week before a derby clash with Hull KR.

Following the postponement of the World Cup until next year, there have been calls to extend the Super League season.

After their win over Salford on Friday night, Wigan have played the most games in the competition with 18, one more than Leeds. Catalans are currently playing their 17th game of the season at St Helens.

Hull have played 14, two more than their city rivals Hull KR who have played the fewest games on 12.

Warrington have won 11 and drawn one of their 15 games, placing them third in the table, behind champions St Helens and leaders Catalans.
