Adrian Lam: We look like a rudderless ship

Wigan coach Adrian Lam admitted his side “look like a rudderless ship” following their 14-0 home defeat to Leeds.

The Warriors have now gone more than 200 minutes of action without scoring a try after suffering a third defeat in a row at the hands of the Rhinos, who claimed their first win at Wigan in eight years.

The first half was not the most entertaining in terms of try-scoring opportunities, but it was an end-to-end contest that just lacked a bit of skill and composure from both teams.

Wigan were heavily criticised for the way they attacked against St Helens, and there was definitely an improvement with Jai Field and Harry Smith going close, but they still lacked that killer touch in a 14-0 defeat.

Adrian Lam admitted it was a not good night and feels everyone is low on confidence.

He said: “It’s not a good night. We are down in confidence the whole group, and it’s showing. If we had scored first it could have been a different game, but it’s easy to say in hindsight.

“When we didn’t score first, then they get a lucky try with the ball coming back off the post.

“It’s tough. When you don’t have confidence, you don’t have cohesion and you just start playing on your own.

“We look like a rudderless ship. Our spine and key players are not combining well. We seem to have a different full-back each week, it makes it really hard to build any momentum.”

Wigan currently sit fourth in the Super League table, having won 12 out of their 21 games this year, while Leeds now sit in fifth after last night’s victory.

The Warriors face Castleford, Warrington, Hull and Catalans in their remaining fixtures as they look to secure a spot in the play-offs.
