Tyrone McCarthy calls time on his career
Ireland international Tyrone McCarthy has announced his retirement from rugby league.
The 32-year-old back-rower or loose forward has made almost 300 career appearances for Warrington, Wakefield, Swinton, Northern Pride, Hull KR, St George Illawarra Dragons, Salford and Leigh.
McCarthy won 19 caps for Ireland on the international stage and played in two World Cups for the Wolfhounds.
On his retirement, McCarthy said: “Today is the day I have decided to call time on my career as a professional. Playing rugby league has made me the man I am today, it has given me some incredible highs and some soul searching lows, but there is no doubt it has helped me develop attributes needed to be successful in life, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it has given me and my family.

“I will finish proud of what I have achieved so far, and hope to be still involved in the game in the future in some aspect. However, immediately I am going to take time to focus on my health and ensure I make a full recovery whilst spending time with the people that matter most.”
Leigh coach Kurt Haggerty said: “He’s the last of the old school. He’s the epitome of what hard work can get you in rugby league.
“He’s a brilliant fellow and a brilliant professional. Even though he’s not played a lot for us, his influence within the squad behind the scenes has been really important. His impact has been massive for everyone.”
McCarthy won two Challenge Cups with hometown club Warrington (2009, 2012) and was also part of the Hull KR squad that reached the Challenge Cup final in 2015. He also enjoyed success Down Under, helping Northern Pride win the Queensland Cup in 2014.
