Irish international Dec O’Donnell returns to Workington
Ireland international hooker Dec O’Donnell has returned to Workington Town after leaving London Broncos.
O’Donnell had previously signed a two-year deal with the Broncos ahead of the 2022 season, but left the club after failing to settle in the capital.
He made 12 appearances for the club ahead in the 2021 season, and helped them secure their promotion to the Championship.
The Ireland international returns to the club for the second time. He was initially due to play for Ottawa in 2021, but returned to Workington after the Canadian side deferred their entry to League One.
He will now be part of Workington’s first Championship season since their relegation in 2016. They were promoted alongside Barrow, meaning all three Cumbrian sides will play in the second tier.
In a statement on Twitter, Town Head Coach Chris Thorman said: “I think most people know Dec and myself have always had a close player-coach relationship.
“We stayed in touch over the last couple of months, and it became clear his move to London Broncos wasn’t going to work out for him, for a couple of reasons. But mainly because it’s a long way from his northern roots.
“He made the Broncos aware of this, and they released him from his contract. We then acted quickly to secure his services.”

London Broncos head coach Jermaine Coleman said: “Declan has been open and honest with us about his situation and the need to move back up north.
“We agreed with his request to end his contract.
“He worked hard during his time with the club and we wish him the best for the future.
“This sometimes happens in sport and it creates an opportunity for someone else to step up. We’re happy with the direction of our squad and are looking forward to the season.”
