Leigh Centurions have announced the signing of youngster James McDonnell on a month’s loan from Wigan.

McDonnell, 22, can feature in the back-row or centres. He previously enjoyed a loan spell with York in the 2021 Championship season.

He made his debut for Wigan in 2020 against St Helens. McDonnell played seven games for York in the 2021 season and two further Super League games for Wigan.

Head coach Adrian Lam said: “I have coached James for a couple of years now and he is a great young talent with a bright future.

“He also has a traditional bit of the back rower about him, as he is a strong defender and uncompromising.

“James runs great lines and has a real presence on the field.

“He is important to our squad, as we are a little light on back rowers and James will bring youth, energy and enthusiasm to the playing squad.”

One in, one out

The club have confirmed the departure of Jayden Hatton.

The winger did not receive a squad number ahead of the 2022 Championship season. The 22-year-old left hometown club Widnes at the end of the 2021 season to pursue full-time rugby. He had signed a one-year deal with the Centurions.

The club added in a statement: Leigh Centurions can confirm that Jayden Hatton has asked to be released from his contract with the club to pursue opportunities outside the sport.

Jayden leaves with our best wishes for the future.
