St Helens to investigate incident during season opener
St Helens have confirmed that they will investigate allegations made during their opening game against Catalans.
The incident follows remarks made to a seven-year-old at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
St Helens opened their new campaign with a 28-8 victory over the Dragons at home.
St Helens to investigate incident
Following the clash, a fan posted on social media: “First game of the new season should have been fun for Oliver tonight and it would have been had he not had to endure racist comments from a small number of St Helens fans.
“All because he supports Catalans Dragons and they (wrongly) assumed he was French.
“As a result of these comments, he’s been left tearful and wondering if he even wants to wear his Dragons kit to games as he is worried it will happen again.
“Oliver is seven years old and everyone who knows him knows rugby is his life. But now his confidence is shattered. As his mum, to see him so upset breaks my heart. He was just a little boy out to support a team.
“He did not deserve the abuse from a minority of narrow minded and ignorant ‘fans’.
“Every fan should be able to go to a match and to enjoy the game they love without fear of any kind of abuse.
“The incident has been reported to the club and I will be formalising the complaint in.”
Sadly last night @Steeley0504 was subjected to vile racist abuse whilst at the @Saints1890 @DragonsOfficiel game by a small number of saints fans (ADULTS as well as children.)
As his mum I will be following this up with the club #SayNoToRacism @TheRFL @SuperLeague pic.twitter.com/dOsKQ507mk
