Ireland international Will Hope steps away from game to pursue new career

Swinton Lions have confirmed that Will Hope has departed the club to pursue a new career.

The League 1 side have confirmed that Hope has been accepted into the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service.

Hope has previously featured for Salford, Oldham and Sheffield.

He had originally made the move to Heywood Road ahead of the 2018 season. Hope was a part of the history-making side that finished the club’s highest ranking for 21 years – ninth placed in the Championship in 2019.

The 28-year-old has won nine caps for Ireland. He represented the side in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, making one appearance.

The forward followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Jim Hope, who also played for the club.

Swinton have confirmed that they will retain Hope’s registration in the possibility for his return.

In a statement, Swinton added: “Clearly this is a fantastic career opportunity for Will. We are very proud of him and he has the full support of everyone at Swinton Lions.

“It’s the intention of the club to retain Will’s registration in case it becomes possible for him to be available for selection at some point later in the season.”

It continued: “We are sure our supporters will join the club in wishing Will all the very best in his future career.”
