Lee Radford pin-points penalty count in defeat

Lee Radford pin-pointed the game’s penalty count following Castleford’s 34-10 defeat to Warrington.

Radford’s side came out second-best as Daryl Powell faced his former club for the first time.

Winger Matty Ashton opened the scoring early in the game with a length-of-the-field try. Half-back George Williams extended their advantage to 12-0 at the break.

International winger Josh Charnley scored a brace on his 100th Warrington appearance. He also crossed for his 250th career try; his 64th for the Wolves.

Centre Peter Mata’utia scored against his former club while prop forward Rob Mulhern also crossed for a four-pointer.

Reacting to the game, Radford discussed the penalty count which went heavily against his side.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “A tough one that. I thought how we started, outstanding defensively. Plenty of effort there; line speed, the energy and the indicators that we talked about, I thought we got that.

“I think we were on the back-end of a 10-4 penalty count and 3-1 six-agains. Eventually, it caught up with us and burnt us at the wrong end of the candle unfortunately.

“We’ll have a look at them in detail. Some are Warrington I think and some we can have a look at.

“They (Warrington) must be very disciplined to only concede that many. So, well done to them.”

Two defeats for Tigers

Castleford remain without a win so far in 2022. They opened their campaign with a 26-16 defeat to Salford at a sold out Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Marc Sneyd stole the show against his former club on the night, kicking seven goals from as many attempts.

Next up, Castleford travel to Craven Park to face Tony Smiths Hull KR on Friday, February 25.
