Storm Eunice causes ‘six-figures’ worth of damage at Barrow ground
Barrow Raiders have been left counting the cost of Storm Eunice after high winds caused significant damage at their Craven Park home.
Their popular marquee, which has helped the club enhance its profile and turnover in recent years, was obliterated by the storm.
As well as being popular on a matchday, it has opened up several new revenue streams for the recently promoted Championship club.
Perimeter walls have fallen and there has been damage to the main grandstand, while damage was also caused to vehicles in a nearby retail park..
The improvements at Craven Park in recent seasons have also helped to aid the development of their Ladies side, now in Super League, and Furness Raiders.
But it has also firmly established the Raiders at the heart of its community in Barrow.
Club praise fantastic response
A club spokesperson said: “As you are probably aware Barrow Raiders were a victim of Storm Eunice; with estimated damage well into six figures with the loss of our marquee, perimeter wall, damage to the grandstand and other advertising hoardings. Add to this the loss of revenue in the short term.
“Thankfully no one was hurt although there were some near misses within our own team and some of us have used up a life today.
“We have had a fantastic response with many people involved with the initial tidy-up operation this afternoon. But we will be reconvening at 9am Saturday morning if anyone is able to lend a hand. Hopefully the wind will have dropped by then!
“This is a massive blow to the club but with your support we will come back stronger.”
Barrow’s game away at Bradford on Sunday has already been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Over the past 12 months, Barrow have held several events within their marquee and on the pitch.
That included DJ sets, Euro 2020 screenings and movie nights.
They have received praise for their efforts in generating further revenue which has been invested in to the rugby side.
