Willie Poching proud of Wakefield effort despite defeat

Wakefield Head Coach Willie Poching has said he is proud of his team’s effort following their 20-4 defeat at St Helens.

Poching’s side are still looking for their first victory, but have also come up against both of last season’s grand finalists in their first three games.

They welcome Leeds next Thursday, with both sides looking for their first win of the season after Leeds were beaten by Catalans on Thursday.

Whilst he was pleased on their effort, Poching just felt their execution was lacking.

He said: “I’m really proud of their effort. I think there’s no fault in that. Especially defensively, I think we fronted up, we chanced our arm, which is part of what we wanted to do.

“We created some opportunities through some breaks in the first half. They sort of got a sniff on it in the second half.  They showed the defensive qualities and champion qualities.

“I just thought with the opportunities we got ball wise, we didn’t quite take. We lost our composure a little bit.

“Whilst we still wanted to play with a bit of flair, we had a plan that we didn’t quite execute the way we wanted to up their end. But as I said, that showed the champion quality.”

Poching gives update on Lineham

In addition, Wakefield lost winger Tom Lineham to injury after just 13 minutes. Willie Poching said he could be facing a couple of weeks out.

He was replaced  by Liam Kay, who would stay out on the wing for the rest of the match.

He added: “Tom Lineham, we’ll have a look tomorrow. I’m not sure if it’s significant, but it could be a couple of weeks for for Tom unfortunately, but will have a better  idea in the morning.”
