Championship: York thump Widnes, two draws & Bradford win in Cumbria
It is not often you get a draw in the Championship, but there were two this weekend.
League leaders Featherstone were held to a 20-20 draw at West Yorkshire rivals Batley.
Greg Johnson, Carr Connor and Toby Everett scored for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Josh Hardcastle (2), Craig Hall and Ryley Jacks went over for Rovers.
In the other draw, London Broncos came from behind to seal their first point of the season with an 18-all draw at Barrow.
The Raiders left 18-8 with just 10 minutes remaining, but tries from Oli Leyland and Alex Walker earned a point for the Broncos.
In the earlier kick-off, Bradford claimed the spoils in Cumbria against Workington thanks to a 26-12 scoreline. Liam Tindall, Aaron Murphy, Thomas Doyle and Kieran Gill went over for the Bulls. Dec Patton kicked five goals.
It was a tight contest at the Tetley’s Stadium, but Newcastle Thunder survived a Dewsbury fightback to finish 24-22 winners. Brad Gallagher, Isaac Nokes and Josh Eaves went over for Thunder. Ex-Wigan half-back Jake Shorrocks kicked four goals.
Sheffield Eagles secured an impressive 44-6 win at Whitehaven. Italy World Cup hopeful Ryan King opened the scoring for Whitehaven but it was all Sheffield from then on. Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e and Matty Chrimes scored two tries each for the Eagles. On loan half-back Tom Holmes kicked six goals.
York eased past Widnes 32-6 at the LNER Community Stadium. Matty Marsh, Brendan O’Hagan, Brad Ward, Marcus Stock and Levi Edwards scored York’s tries against a below-par Widnes.
In the final Championship game of the round, high-flyers Leigh travel to Halifax on Monday evening.
