Hull KR: Six potential candidates to be next head coach
Following Tony Smith’s announcement that 2022 will be his last year as head coach at Hull KR, we take a look at six potential candidates for 2023 and beyond.
On Wednesday, Smith announced that he will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.
We’ve taken a look at six potential candidates who could take over at Craven Park…
Anthony Seibold
Anthony Seibold could be on his way to Hull KR for 2023 and beyond. Reports in Australia have linked the former Brisbane Broncos head coach to the soon-to-be vacant role at Rovers. The 47-year-old played for Hull KR between 2003 and 2004. He is currently the defence coach for England’s national rugby union team under Eddie Jones.
Danny Ward
Danny Ward had been the previous favourite for the vacant Leeds coaching role. However, the Rhinos have appointed Rohan Smith on a three-and-a-half year deal. Ward, 41, has recently taken a new role on the coaching team at rugby union side Rosslyn Park. However, he could be tempted back into rugby league with this position.
Danny McGuire
Super League’s highest try scorer, Danny McGuire was another name that was linked with the Leeds role. However, the current Hull KR assistant coach ruled himself out of the position. The 39-year-old currently works under Tony Smith at Craven Park, and could step up to the role. However, McGuire did admit that he’s not quite ready for a head coaching role earlier in March.
Ryan Carr
There was talk last year of Carr taking over the coaching reins from Agar at Headingley – but nothing ever materialised. He is a familiar face in the British game, having enjoyed a coaching spell with Featherstone. During his time at the Rovers, he was also an assistant to then-Leeds coach Richard Agar. He also has coaching experience at Cronulla Sharks and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Michael Monaghan
Michael Monaghan is yet to make his debut as a head coach. The former Canberra, Manly and Warrington hooker made close to 300 professional appearances. He has coaching experience at both Catalans and Wakefield, before returning to Australia in 2018. He joined Manly Sea Eagles as pathways and specialist coach in the NRL.
David Furner
David Furner had a very short brief with Leeds back in 2019. The former player is currently within the backroom staff at Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL. He was also the head coach of Canberra Raiders between 2009-2013.
