Jason Qareqare: Castleford want to get the best out of Fijian speedster

Castleford coach Lee Radford says they want to get the best out of rising star Jason Qareqare, who has recently signed a new deal with the club.

The Tigers fought off interest from rugby union and other Super League clubs to secure the services of 18-year-old Jason Qareqare on a two-year contract extension earlier this week.

The Fijian backed up his new contract by scoring a 90-metre try inside the first minute of Castleford’s 30-10 win over St Helens on Friday night.

Radford said: “I thought his boot had touched a bit of the white stuff on the floor – thankfully it didn’t.

“It would have been an injustice if he hadn’t scored after such an unbelievable effort.

“As a winger you are judged on your try scoring ratio but he was also fantastic out of back field.

“He has just signed a new deal and I want to see him be the best he can be over the next couple of seasons.”

St Helens boss proud of young players

St Helens coach Kristian Woolf said he was proud of his young squad’s effort in their defeat at the Jungle.

On the big changes, Woolf said: “I was never going to regret that decision, no matter what. It was 100% right.

“The young blokes showed they are Saints players; that was the most important thing. It is a moment they will remember the rest of their lives.

“They put their bodies on the line, they scrambled well and worked really hard to save tries.

“I thought when we gave ourselves a good opportunity we showed we were really threatening. We probably just let ourselves down with basic errors, whether it was a pass or a catch, particularly coming off our own line.”

It is only St Helens’ second defeat of the season, with them having lost to Toulouse in the south of France earlier on in the year.
