Leigh already planning for 2023 with retentions – including Nene Macdonald
Leigh Centurions head coach Adrian Lam has already began preparations for 2023 with player retentions.
The head coach has revealed that star centre Nene Macdonald has already signed up for the 2023 season.
Macdonald, 28, is the joint-leading try scorer in the Championship with 10 so far. He has impressed in his debut year in England, and could have been a potential target for Super League clubs for the 2023 season.
Other impressive Leigh players so far include Caleb Aekins, Edwin Ipape and John Asiata.
However, Lam has been working on retaining some of his key men for the next campaign.
Adrian Lam begins work for 2023
“I think we’ve done a pretty good job so far in regards to retention,” Lam told Love Rugby League.
“Obviously it’s ongoing, both retention and recruitment. We’ve recruited quite well in the last six weeks as well, but we’ve also kept some of our better players.
“I’m really happy with where we’re at and we’ll keep working hard at it.
“Nene is contracted here for another 12 months. He’s not going anywhere at the moment unless a club comes in with some sort of left-field offer.
“We’ve got him and the better ones contracted for next year, so we’ll just play it week-by-week.”
Blake Ferguson to make debut against Workington
Former NRL winger Blake Ferguson will make his Leigh debut this Sunday against Workington in the Championship.
The 32-year-old ran waters for the side on Monday at Batley, having landed in the country two weeks ago. Now, the ex-Australian international will make his much anticipated debut at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.
Lam told Love Rugby League: “Blake Ferguson will make his debut this weekend.
“He’s been here for two weeks now and I think that’s enough to have worked his way into the team.
“He’s trained hard enough, so he’ll be included in that squad and he will play on Sunday.”
