Brisbane Broncos face fight to keep Selwyn Cobbo as 14 clubs declare their interest
Brisbane Broncos face a battle to keep hold of Selwyn Cobbo after the player’s agent revealed 14 clubs have expressed an interest in signing the 19-year-old.
Cobbo has got the season off to a flyer and has scored nine tries in the last five games. He scored a hat-trick in the Magic Round demolition of Manly and chipped in with another two in the win over Newcastle on Thursday night.
The Broncos have won five games on the bounce and Cobbo has been instrumental. Therefore it comes as no surprise to hear rival clubs are showing an interest. Indeed up to 14 clubs are keeping an eye on his contract situation.
Selwyn Cobbo interest hots up
It appears that Penrith and Melbourne are the only two NRL clubs not to declare an interest at this stage. And the Broncos could face a tough job trying to keep hold.
Cobbo is under contract until the end of 2023 and the Broncos are keen to extend it. However it remains to be seen if there will be room on the salary cap.
The youngster is said to be on $180,000 a year with the Broncos. And there is talk he could receive offers of up to $900,000 a year to move elsewhere. Such offers for 2024 and beyond can be made from 1st November this year.
Speaking to the Courier Mail, Tas Bartlett of PSM, says interest in their client is hot.
“I’ve managed a lot of athletes over the years but no-one has generated the amount of interest like Selwyn,” Bartlett said. “He is generating all the attention off his own bat.
“I haven’t had to pick the phone up to create interest. All the calls are in-bound and I’ve had 14 clubs contact me to express interest in wanting to sign Selwyn.”
Brisbane Broncos determined to keep Cobbo
Only this week Broncos coach Kevin Walters said he is hopeful of keeping Cobbo. The same applies to Herbie Farnworth and Broncos footy boss Paul Ikin feels the same. He accepts that Cobbo is the talk of the town and it comes as no surprise.
Despite the salary cap issues, Brisbane feel they will be able to keep Cobbo on board.
“I know there is talk about Selwyn, but before that it would have been Reece Walsh or Sam Walker and even David Fifita. There’s been talk about Payne Haas’ contract and Herbie Farnworth has interest, so the talk about Selwyn is nothing new to us,” Ikin said.
