Wigan ace Harry Smith considering Wales call for World Cup

Wigan half-back Harry Smith is considering his options ahead of the World Cup after being contacted by Wales over possibly representing his Welsh heritage.

The 22-year-old was born and raised in England but qualifies to play for Wales through his grandfather, who hails from Cardiff.

Smith, who helped Wigan win the Challenge Cup last weekend, has played for England at junior level and played for the England Knights in 2019.

But Wales have been in touch with Smith over him potentially playing for John Kear’s side at this year’s World Cup.

“I’m keeping an open mind,” Smith told Love Rugby League when asked about his plans for the World Cup.

“I am just concentrating on playing well for Wigan and staying in the team and hopefully helping Wigan get to another final at the end of the year and then I’ll go from there.

“I’m not looking too far ahead. I am just taking it one game at a time and doing my job for Wigan, that’s all I can do at the minute.”

Smith, who has been in superb form for Wigan this season, has had brief conversations with Wales coach Kear and his Welsh grandfather.

He added: “It was someone above (John Kear) who I had a phone call with (initially) and then I’ve had a few texts with John.

“He’s not put any pressure on me or anything. He’s just had a chat with me about my options so it has been good.

“I did mention to my grandad that there is maybe a chance (of me playing for Wales). He said it is up to me and to do whatever is best for me so there is no real pressure from anyone.

“There is that option there if I want it or if they want me to play. I’ve got a few options available so it is exciting at the end of the year but I’m just focusing on doing my bit for Wigan at the minute and hopefully that can put me in a good spot come the end of the year as well. ”
