Brierley’s dream comes true with Scotland

Ryan Brierley has expressed his delight at being named in Scotland head coach Steve McCormack’s Four Nations squad.

The Huddersfield halfback is one of ten uncapped players to be drafted into the Bravehearts team.

“It was a special and proud moment for myself,” he told Love Rugby League.

“I am really humbled and privileged to be a part of the squad and be involved in this fantastic tournament.

“As a kid you dream of playing international Rugby League and fortunately enough I have been given that opportunity.”

Brierley also spoke about the great opportunity to play alongside Scotland captain and Giants teammate Danny Brough.

“To get the chance to learn off him at international is something I am really grateful for,” he said.

“His leadership and organization is second to none. I understand how important he is not just to the club but to country as well.”

The 24-year old was thrilled to make his debut for Scotland last week during a testimonial for Barrow legend Liam Harrison.

“It was a humbling privilege to be part of Liam Harrison’s testimonial,” he said.

“He has done a lot of good things for Barrow over the years and I am glad the Barrow public turned out for him.

Brierley scored his first try for Scotland in that match, which he said was a huge moment in his career.

“It was a bit of a special moment to score my first try,” he said.

“These moments that happen in my career I savour really well. I never take them things for granted.”

Scotland are the fourth-ranked team in the competition and heavy underdogs, but Brierley stressed that it is of little significance.

“We’re under no illusions how many people are going to write us off,” he said.

“We’re certainly the underdogs in the tournament but I can assure you we’re not going to head into the games thinking we are beaten.

“The best thing for us to do is to use that as a motivation and a factor and hopefully just go out there and make the country proud of us.”
