England World Cup hopes in doubt for Herbie Farnworth

The hopes of playing in a World Cup for Herbie Farnworth are in serious doubt after the Brisbane Broncos centre suffered a potential season-ending injury.

The 22-year-old scored two tries in Brisbane’s 24-18 win over Canberra Raiders on Saturday but was forced to leave the action earlier on the hour mark after suffering a bicep injury.

Speaking after the game, Broncos coach Kevin Walters revealed that it could be a season-ending injury for Farnworth.

It would come as a huge blow to Farnworth, Brisbane and England. The Lancashire-born centre has yet to make an appearance for England, but was included in Shaun Wane’s plans ahead of the World Cup.

Speaking back in April, Wane said: “I watch him play every week and he’s doing well with Brisbane.

“He’s a talent and a good athlete and he’s playing really well. I can definitely see him playing in the World Cup.”

 

Herbie Farnworth future

In May, Farnworth signed a new deal with Brisbane that will keep him at the NRL giants until at least the end of next season.

The 22-year-old centre has scored 19 tries in 53 NRL games since making his first team debut in 2019.

Farnworth said: “I’ve been here since I was 15 and I’m really happy with all the boys and (coach) Kevvie and all the staff. I really enjoy it here at the club. I love it here at the Broncos.

“With all the players who have chosen to stay, a lot of us came through the 20s competition together – Fleggy, Kobe, Patty, Payne, Staggs – we’ve all come through together and it’s good to stay together.

“We’re really happy that we can get some wins for our members and fans; and give them something to cheer about at Suncorp.”
