Paul McShane targets Australia move at end of Castleford deal

Castleford captain Paul McShane has revealed to Love Rugby League that he plans to move to Australia at the end of his Tigers contract.

The 32-year old England hooker will retire in 2025 at the end of his current deal. He says he has already discussed his plans to move Down Under. 

Speaking exclusively on this week’s Love Rugby League podcast, McShane explains why he feels it would be fitting to hang up his boots at The Jungle.

“I’d like to go to Australia I think, for a year or two working, coaching in the lower leagues and if my body lets me maybe play part-time,” says McShane.

“I’d like to call it time in 2025 at the end of this contract. I didn’t really start playing every week until I was 25, 26 so I’ll probably be a bit fresher than some my age. But I would have done ten years at Cas by then and I absolutely love playing for Cas. The opportunity they’ve given me and what they have made me, it would be perfect if I could end it that way.”

McShane believes that every rugby player should be actively planning for their future, in a sport not blessed with the financial security of football or rugby union where players can retire on their career earnings. He hopes a move to Australia could help launch his coaching career while providing new memories and experiences for his family.

“Me and my wife have spoken a fair bit, and my kids would be 10 and seven then.

“I’d like to do that and give my kids a different experience. It wouldn’t be a rugby decision, it would be a different way of life and if I can get a coaching gig out there then that would be what I know, but I’d more than happy going out and working .

“I’ve just got three years now to decide what I want to do work-wise.”
