Salford’s director of rugby Tim Sheens has been linked with the vacant head coaching role at Hull Kingston Rovers.

Hull KR are expected to announce their new head coach at the end of the 2016 season.

According to reports in Australia Sheens, one of the most experienced coaches in rugby league, has emerged as a serious contender for the job.

Love Rugby League understands former England coach Steve McNamara is out of the running, while ex-Castleford boss Terry Matterson has been considered for it.

Sheens started his coaching career with Penrith in 1984 and has won four NRL premierships.

The 65-year old has also coached NSW and Australia, leading the Kangaroos to the 2013 World Cup win.

He joined Salford in 2015 as director of rugby. Sheens recently turned down the head of football position at Parramatta.
