The most potent attack in Super League: Why Salford are firing
Salford coach Paul Rowley says his side have the most potent attack in Super League and has backed Kallum Watkins to fire the Red Devils to the play-offs.
The Red Devils are breathing down the necks of the top six, with their recent win over Catalans Dragons a big sign of their potential.
Rowley believes Watkins, plus his his spine of Ryan Brierley, Mark Sneyd and Brodie Croft are as good as anything in the league and a big reason for their offensive threat.
“There are some telling stats for our team that we have the least territory and the least possession, but we have the third best points scored in Super League,” Rowley told this week’s Love Rugby League Podcast.
“I think really that says we are the most potent attacking team in Super League.
“That is a proud achievement as it means we work hard on detail and players execute it extremely well.
“If we get in the play-offs we are a dangerous team and won’t be there to make up the numbers.
“I spoke to Matt Peet (Wigan coach) and he was very complimentary. He says their intensity against us in the Sky game was the closest they have got to replicating the Grand Final.”
Rowley: I always say under-promise, over-deliver
Rowley believes that win over the Dragons gave his side the belief that they can beat anyone and underlined their continued improvement since the start of the season.
He added: “We hadn’t beaten a top-four club. So it was an important yardstick of how far we have come this year.
“I always say under-promise, over-deliver. We spoke about gaining respect and changing people’s opinions at the start of the year. Our form has been good, culminating in a really gritted, spirited performance against Catalans. Some of the tries that we scored were world class.”
“Nailed on” international Kallum Watkins
In Watkins, Rowley says Salford have a player reborn, and one proving his versatility at the top level.
“Kallum is now a back-rower who played centre for England,” Rowley said.
“What a guy to have in your squad that can play centre and back row at such a high level.
“He is such an athlete, a rare commodity and nailed on in any international squad. Off the field his character is unquestionable. The all-round product.”
