Huddersfield sign rising star Harry Rushton from Canberra
Huddersfield have confirmed the signing of highly-rated forward Harry Rushton from NRL side Canberra Raiders on a three-year deal from 2023.
The 20-year-old forward joined the Raiders on a three-year deal ahead of the 2021 season from Super League giants Wigan.
Rushton has made three NRL appearances since making his first-grade debut for Canberra earlier this season.
Giants coach Ian Watson said: “I think he gives us a really good look into the future. We can build around a great, youthful British pack.
“As soon as I found out he was available I wanted to speak to him straight away and explain to him what we are about and what we want to do. I’m over the moon that he’s joining us and that he’s decided the right place for him is here at Huddersfield.
“He talked about his ambition to win things and his ambition to play at international level as well.
“He comes from good stock having been at Wigan and Canberra. Canberra have been really good with him. They looked after him when he told them he wanted to come back home and they’ve really done right by Harry on this one.”
Harry Rushton departs with Canberra’s best wishes
Raiders chief executive Don Furner said: “Harry joined us from Wigan at the beginning of 2021 as a young player looking for an opportunity. He leaves us a player who has had the opportunity to make an NRL debut this season.
“Harry will return home to England to be closer to his family and take up an opportunity closer to home. We wish Harry all the best for the future.”
Rushton grew up in England having been born in the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool. He is of Irish heritage, meaning he could play for England and Ireland on the international stage.
Rushton could represent his English or Irish side of the family at this year’s World Cup if picked by selectors.
