London Broncos Ladies looking to create more history in just second ever season
London Broncos Ladies could create more history in just their second year of existence this weekend with a semi-final clash against Bedford Tigers in the Women’s Super League South.
A victory would lead them to their first ever Grand Final. The semi-final tie is set to take place as part of the club’s double header at Plough Lane this Sunday.
The Men’s side take on Workington in a Championship clash this Sunday.
The Ladies side are coached by Colin Baker, who first became interested in the sport as a fan before volunteering and then going on to join the club’s coaching staff, including a previous full-time role.
In just their second year, the side have completed the regular season undefeated in the Women’s Super League South competition.
Only Bedford Tigers stand in their way of making history and featuring at their first final.
London Broncos Ladies one game away from final
“I’m really proud and really pleased,” said boss Baker.
“To get through the season and finish on top like that is really pleasing for us. It’s a good progression on what we did last year.
“It’s not a long season, but it’s a challenging season and I’m really pleased. This year there has been a real progression.
“I think the double header is a fantastic occasion. The club did it last year as well at Trailfinders.
“That was a really good day. Everyone enjoyed it, the players, the crowd. I think when people watch them play, it raises a few eyebrows.
“I remember last year against the Army, Stevo [Mike Stephenson] came down to watch and he was quite honest afterwards and he was really surprised with the quality of the game.
“He probably came to the game with quite low expectations which is no disrespect to him, I think that would be quite a common reaction for a lot of people.
‘It’s a fantastic thing’
“He was really surprised at the quality of the game. I think that’s the impact we can have when we expose it to a wider audience. I’ve always been passionate about spreading the game down here. We’ve developed a lot of players who have gone on to really good things. Super League is littered with players who come through the Broncos pathway which is great.
“I think with the Women’s game, there’s an equal, if not a bigger opportunity. I think with the Women’s game, it can be as good as we want it to be. There’s a lot of things that need to go into that, but if the game is serious, the RFL and all the clubs, it can be as good as we want it to be. It’s a fantastic thing.”
The double-header will also be streamed live on Our League this Sunday.
