St Helens in ongoing talks with off-contract Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook

St Helens head coach Kristian Woolf has confirmed to Love Rugby League that the club are in ongoing talks with off-contract forward Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

The former England and Ireland international would turn 37 before the start of next season.

He signed a one-year contract extension with the Totally Wicked Stadium side for the current campaign and remains with a deal for 2023.

Woolf admits that McCarthy-Scarsbrook is keen to stay with the reigning champions, with contract negotiations ongoing. He recently celebrated his 400th Super League appearance in the derby against Wigan.

“He reminds the squad often that he wants to stay for another year,” Woolf joked. 

“There is conversations going on with Louie at the moment. At some stage, sooner rather than later, we’ll figure out what we’re doing there. 

“At the moment, if you look at the last couple of weeks in particular, I think he’s played some of his best games this year which is a really good sign. 

“He looks after himself well. He’s a great athlete for his age. He’s got one of the best abilities that I’ve seen in terms of the amount of footy he’s played for the age he is. 

“For how long he’s been around the club, he still really enjoys everything that he does. He comes in with a smile on his face and comes in and makes people laugh. 

“He comes to every game doing the same thing. He’s great around the group and infectious around the group and there all really positive things about him. We’ll sort that (his future) out in the next week or two.”
