Newcastle Knights winger Dom Young couldn’t have dreamt for a better England debut after getting on the scoresheet in a thrilling 50-0 win over Fiji.

The 21-year-old has earned his first England call-up after being named in Shaun Wane’s 24-man squad for the World Cup on home soil.

Young opened the scoring for England in the 14th minute before they went on to score eight more tries in a hammering of an under-strength Fiji side.

“Dom was probably the standout for me,” said half-back George Williams, who captained England for the first time in the absence of regular skipper Sam Tomkins.

“I thought his carries out of yardage were massive for us.

“He is an unbelievable freak of nature really. He is 6ft 6in, big, strong, fast.

“But the most impressive thing for me about him were his carries out of yardage and how he was making good yards for us against a big Fiji side.”

Shaun Wane impressed with debutant Dom Young

Young, who was going to represent his Jamaican heritage at the World Cup before England came calling, has scored 18 tries in 26 tries in the NRL so far.

And England boss Shaun Wane will be hoping Young can continue his rich vein of form at the World Cup.

“I thought he did some really good things,” Wane said. “I’ll always find something he can improve on.

“He carried the ball strongly out of yardage. His skill was good. Getting his hands on the ball (more) would have impressed me more but it was a great first game for him. I was very impressed.

“He has done some outstanding things for Newcastle this year. He is 6ft 6in, he is an aerial threat. The thing that impressed me most about him were his carries out of yardage. He was a handful and that troubled Fiji.

“Dom has fitted in really well and I’ve been really impressed with him.”

England are in a group alongside Samoa, France and Greece. Wane’s men get their World Cup campaign underway against Samoa at in Newcastle on Saturday, October 15.
