Kings of Ireland: George excited to play alongside brother Toby again
Ireland captain George King says it will be a proud moment for their family when he plays alongside his brother Toby for the first time at a World Cup.
The pair first played on the international stage together in 2016, helping the Wolfhounds qualify for the 2017 World Cup.
Toby didn’t play in the tournament though, meaning their first World Cup together will be this autumn, with the King household cheering them on from the sidelines.
“I remember when he made his debut against Russia and I remember then when we talked about playing in a World Cup together,” George told Love Rugby League. “It’s here now so hopefully we can play together against Jamaica.
“Our family are massive Irish fans. Hopefully we will get a few coming over to watch us. It’s going to be a really good moment for our family and one that I’m really looking forward to.
“I’m really proud to pull the jersey on and sing the national anthem and get this World Cup campaign up and running.”
Ireland hoping to give the World Cup a shake
Ged Corcoran’s side are in a group alongside New Zealand, Lebanon and Jamaica at this year’s tournament.
The Wolfhounds get their World Cup campaign underway against debutants Jamaica at Headingley on Sunday, October 16.
“The progression that we’ve made with RugbyLeague Ireland has been really good and players kept themselves in tip top condition since the season finished,” King told Love Rugby League.
“I want people’s opinions to change on Rugby League Ireland after this World Cup. I’m not bothered if we lose 60-0 as long as we are trying our hardest as a group. I want everyone to see the passion, desire and work ethic and if they do, then I’d be more than happy.
“Ged and Joe (O‘Callaghan, assistant) have brought the culture in collectively. The 32 counties of Ireland are represented across our playing and training kit. Our slogan “there’s no strength without unity” is across our logo. It has been a surreal camp so far and I couldn’t have asked for a better one.
“We’ve got a good team and we are building combinations as we are getting closer to Jamaica so we are really looking forward to the challenge.”
King will be looking to add to his 10 Irish caps when he leads the Wolfhounds this autumn.
