Salford Red Devils duo added to Samoa’s World Cup squad
Salford Red Devils duo Ken Sio and Tim Lafai have been added to Samoa’s World Cup squad ahead of their match against Greece.
Lafai, 31, impressed in his debut season in Super League at the AJ Bell Stadium. The centre made 22 appearances, scoring six tries and assisting a further 14.
He has won 13 caps for Samoa since making his international debut in 2013, and also represented the nation at the World Cup Nines in 2019.
31-year-old Sio qualifies through heritage and could make his Samoa debut during the tournament. He finished the Super League season with 26 tries in 26 appearances, closing in on 100 tries in the competition.
The Salford Red devils pair were named in the Super League Dream Team at the conclusion of the regular season.
Matt Parish’s side face Greece next in Group A in Doncaster before meeting France in Warrington in their final group match.
Samoa’s injuries
Samoa suffered three injuries during their World Cup opener against England at St James’ Park. The result finished in an unexpected 60-6 defeat for the star-studded side in Newcastle.
Tyrone May was stretchered from the field early in the second half. It has been confirmed the 26-year-old utility dislocated his hip and was treated in hospital in Newcastle.
Braden Hamlin-Uele came off during the first half with a calf injury. Meanwhile, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow suffered a syndesmosis injury and looks likely to miss the rest of the World Cup campaign in England.
