Shaun Wane welcomes selection headache ahead of quarter-final
England boss Shaun Wane has welcomed the selection headache he will endure ahead of his side’s quarter-final clash in the World Cup.
England will face the runners-up of Group D next Saturday at the DW Stadium in the next stage of the tournament.
Wane will have selection decisions to make across all positions ahead of next weekend’s clash in Wigan. Marc Sneyd kicked 13 goals and crossed for a try in a record-breaking solo performance, competing against George Williams and Jack Welsby in the halves.
Dom Young crossed for four tries in the first half against Greece in Sheffield in the 94-4 victory. Ryan Hall also crossed for two more tries, taking his World Cup history tally to 14, joint-second alongside Jarryd Hayne, while Tommy Makinson is expected to be a starter.
When asked about selecting his strongest 17, Wane responded: “I’m fairly close.
“The last three weeks have been hard, with game time for everybody. Everybody has put their hands up and played. Next week it’ll be 17 players who can get us a win in the quarter-finals.
“I’m glad (for the headache). Today was a really good win. I’ve got really good physios and really good assistants.
“I’ve not done too much this week. The physios are keeping the players healthy and we’ve got a strong squad to pick from.
“The wingers are strong, but I will pick the two who can get us a win over quarter-finals.
“Dom is playing really well. He trains well and is very quiet off the field. But when he turns up to games, he knows how to score and carry a few yardage.
“He’s a talent, there’s no doubt about it. He can score and is very skilful.”
