How Sheffield Eagles are shaping up for 2023
Sheffield Eagles have been one of the busiest Championship clubs in the transfer department so far this off-season.
Head coach Mark Aston has added plenty of experience and talent to his squad, having finished eighth in the 2022 season with 11 wins from 26.
Not only that, but the Championship outfit have been handing out lengthy deals to new star players, with a clear eye on the future of the club.
One of those players include former Super League forward and Ireland international Oliver Roberts, who has joined on a three-year deal from Newcastle Thunder.
Titus Gwaze has made the switch on a lengthy three-year contract from Halifax. Aston has also reunited with son Cory for the upcoming Championship campaign, with the half-back joining from the Panthers on a three-year deal.
Jesse Sene-Lefao is another stand-out addition, making the move from Featherstone Rovers on a two-year deal, while the experienced Aaron Murphy joins from Bradford on a two-year deal.
With 75 Super League appearances to his name, winger Matty Dawson-Jones has signed with the club from Bradford. 37-year-old Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e has also agreed to a new one-year deal for the 2023 Championship campaign.
Forward Lewis Peachey makes the move from Castleford on a three-year deal, having featured on loan with Newcastle throughout 2022.
The side also have two players who featured in the delayed 2021 World Cup campaign in England. Bayley Liu represented Scotland most recently in the tournament. While Ben Jones-Bishop scored Jamaica’s first-ever World Cup try against New Zealand. It was also his 300th career appearance.
Sheffield’s captain Anthony Thackeray has taken a U-turn on his retirement decision to play on 2023. He re-signs with the club alongside the likes of Matty Chrimes, Izaac Farrell and Kris Welham.
The Eagles are shaping up nicely and look to be a threat to make the play-offs in 2023.
