Oldham half-back set for lengthy spell on sidelines following nasty knee injury
Oldham half-back Lewis Sheridan is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines following a knee injury sustained over the weekend against former club Rochdale.
Sheridan, 29, dislocated his knee and snapped his patella tendon during Oldham’s Law Cup victory over their League 1 rivals.
One of the most prolific try-scorers last season in the division, Sheridan was stretchered from the field in the second half and was sent to Royal Oldham Hospital. He has since undergone surgery.
He joined Stuart Littler’s Oldham during the off-season from Rochdale.
Oldham release statement on injured star
Chairman Chris Hamilton said in a statement: “Myself and Stuart Littler were in contact throughout the evening with Lewis, who as well as being in a lot of pain, was upset at the injury so early into his Oldham career.
“He was still in A&E late into the night, waiting for a bed and waiting to hear when the surgeons were going to be able to operate.
“After spending an uncomfortable night, he was told the surgeons would operate today (January 30) and they have done.
“It is a particularly nasty injury. And on his x-ray his knee cap was a long way from where it should have been.
“We don’t have any news yet on timescales. The most important thing right now is getting the operation done successfully and making sure Lewis is looked after.
“The club will be doing all it can to provide him with support during this difficult time.
“We have sent the best wishes of everybody connected with the club to him. And it goes without saying we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Sheridan has since taken to social media, sharing: “Thank you for all the kind messages of support. Ian’t really explain how gutted I am about it but I’ll try my best to come back better.
“Thank you to the Oldham staff and fans and Rochdale staff and fans for the help and support on the field today when it happened. It means a lot.”
