King: We need a more appealing product
Warrington forward George King believes there are deeper underlying issues in Super League that needed to be addressed following the likes of Chris Sandow breaking his contract prematurely.
Sandow, who is contracted to the Wolves until 2018, was supposed to report back for pre-season training on 21 November but has remained in Australia.
Leeds hooker James Segeyaro has followed suit, while Castleford winger Denny Solomona is trying to force a move to Sale.
“I totally disagree with what they’ve done, I don’t think it’s good, but if we change their mindset of wanting to stay because we’ve got a better product then they’ll stay,” King told Love Rugby League.
“As an organization I think we really need to question why these players want to move.
“Do we need to raise the cap? Do we need to make of a product? Do we need to sell it more?”
When asked about how much of a loss Sandow would be to Warrington, King was confident that a suitable replacement would be brought in soon enough.
“I don’t think we’ll have no problem replacing him because we have always signed good players at Warrington,” he said.
“The good thing about Warrington is that you are always going to be playing with world class players.”
King admitted it was sad to see such a talented player leaving the club.
“As for Chrissy I’d be lying if I said we weren’t going to miss him because he were a really, really good player and he were a really nice lad,” he said.
“He had his off-field issues and I wish him all the best.”
Despite narrowly missing out in two competitions last season, spirits at the Wire have been high during pre-season according to King.
The Wolves suffered defeats in the Challenge Cup final and Super League Grand Final at the hands of Hull FC and Wigan respectively.
“All the new lads have bedded in really well and everyone is really striving for good things in 2017 and we’re looking forward to it,” the forward said.
“We have got some really good new staff in as well and everyone is just buying into the culture.”
The 21-year old stressed they would have to be at their absolute best in every match with other teams making good additions during the off-season.
“Saints and Castleford have really strengthened well over the last season and they’re going to be really good title contenders,” he said.
“If you’re not playing well in any game you’re going to get found out.”
Warrington have seen a number of new recruits arrive at the Haliwell Jones Stadium, including Matty Blythe, Andre Savelio, Dom Crosby and Mike Cooper.
“You can really see the good stuff that he has and you can see he is going to be a really good positive addition for us,” King said.
“You can also see why big Dom Crosby coming from Wigan is a Grand Final winner.
“He’s a really top bloke and a proper gentleman and I will look forward to playing with him next year.”
