Betts on the lookout for new signings
Widnes coach Denis Betts says he is on the hunt to add some more quality into his side for 2017.
The Vikings have signed Leigh centre Tom Armstrong for next season.
When about the possibility of more signings, Betts told Love Rugby League there would be some new faces arriving at the Select Security Stadium in the near future.
“I think we’ll have some more arrivals,” he said.
“We’re in a pretty strong position with regards to the salary cap. I have got to put some more quality back in this side.”
Betts said that now was a hard time to bring in quality players, and it could be near the beginning of next season.
“I’d like to think there’ll be some movement either at the start of the season or not too long into the season,” he said.
“It’s late in the year with regards to signing players and the kind of players you’re looking for you have to plan for next year.”
Despite recently losing Kevin Brown, who made 97 appearances for the Vikings, Betts has been impressed with how everyone has conducted themselves since.
Brown, 32, moved to Super League rivals Warrington on a two-year deal.
“I have been really impressed with how quickly they’ve moved on really,” he said.
“We dusted ourselves down and realized it became an opportunity for other people in the team.”
Widnes started off last season in great form, winning six of their first Super League matches.
Betts admitted it was a massive boost for the club.
“Starting big last year was one of our saving graces,” he said.
“We went on a run of some disappointing results but we more than competitive last year than we’ve ever been.”
