Parliament concerned by Sheffield move

The All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group has revealed that it has written to the acting chief executive of Sheffield Eagles, to express concern about the club’s move to Wakefield.

The Eagles have been compelled to find a temporary venue away from the Steel City, with Sheffield’s soccer clubs unwilling to share.

Sheffield Wednesday’s manager apparently squashed any ideas that the Eagles might have had about playing at Hillsborough, and support from elsewhere in the city has been limited too.

The Group has offered its support to the club, and will help in its search for a permanent home.

“The news that Sheffield Eagles will play their 2017 home games in Wakefield is disappointing, particularly given the notable history of rugby league in the city, and the club’s excellent work in the local community,” Group chairman and Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, said.

“I know that the club will be doing all that they can to return to Sheffield as soon as possible, and hope that Sheffield City Council and the rugby league authorities can support them in finding a new home.”
