Currie won’t give up on World Cup

The Rugby League World Cup in Australia might be less than a year away but it is certainly something which Warrington back-rower Ben Currie believes he can be involved in with England.

Just over three months ago, Currie suffered a devastating knee injury right at the business end of last season and was initially ruled out for six to nine months.

The forward was tipped to be a part of England‘s Four Nations squad before his injury, but now he is setting his sights on the World Cup.

“It’s definitely a target for me,” he told Love Rugby League.

“In whatever time I do have hopefully I can impress enough to earn a place in the squad which will go over to Australia for the World Cup.

“It will be amazing to know that you can come back and still get to a level that you were performing at previously.”

The 22-year old had played a key part during the Wolves season last year and was almost certain to feature in the grand final.

Currie admitted it was really difficult when he picked up the injury weeks before the Four Nations.

“It was devastating with the international break not long after where I could have maybe got my chance,” he said.

“To have that taken away from me through injury was hard to take at the time.”

The game he suffered the injury in was just weeks before the showpiece Super League event at Old Trafford, and Currie explained how frustrating it was to see all his fellow teammates walk out onto the pitch.

Matters were made worse when he couldn’t even attend the game as a spectator.

“To watch all the lads walk out knowing I could have possibly been part of it was hard to take but I still felt devastated for the boys because of the result,” he said.

“I was cheering them on but I couldn’t make it to the game unfortunately because I had the operation two days before it.”

Currie might have originally been ruled out for a large part of the upcoming season, but he is aiming for a much quicker recovery.

“It’s feeling good and all looking like I am on target,” the back-rower said.

“Hopefully I can come back sooner rather than later so I get most of the season to try and press.”
